Netflix is partnering with Spike Lee's 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks to bring an innovative new project to viewers: a captivating time travel narrative titled "See You Yesterday."

This film, inspired by a critically acclaimed short, explores the story of two young Brooklyn teens who are scientific geniuses.

Claudette “C.J.” Walker and Sebastian J. Thomas craft rudimentary time machines in a daring effort to prevent the wrongful death of C.J.'s brother, Calvin, at the hands of law enforcement.

Produced by Spike Lee, the movie features performances by Eden Duncan-Smith, known for "Roxanne Roxanne," alongside newcomer Danté Crichlow.

"See You Yesterday" marks the directorial debut of Stefon Bristol, a talented NYU graduate and protégé of Lee, who co-wrote the screenplay with Fredrica Bailey during their time at Tisch School of the Arts.

Their previous success includes winning the Best HBO Short Film Award at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival in 2017 for the original short version of the story, which also reached audiences via HBO and Cinemax streaming platforms.

Bristol has spoken about the motivation behind the project, revealing that it was conceived amid the turmoil following the deaths of Mike Brown and Eric Garner, aiming to keep conversations about police violence alive through a unique sci-fi lens.

He describes the protagonists as embodying a rarely seen Brooklyn—C.J. as a straightforward, ambitious astrophysicist, and Sebastian as a prolific inventor, both representing bright, charismatic young Black minds.

Bailey emphasizes the film’s genre-blending style, combining entertainment with social commentary, and praises its focus on powerful, young Black characters confronting systemic issues.

For both Eden Duncan-Smith and Danté Crichlow, this is their first major leading role, and the cast also includes notable talents like rapper Brian 'Astro' Bradley, Johnathan Nieves, Marsha S. Blake, Wavvy Jonez, Myra Lucretia Taylor, and Ron Bobb Semple.

Executive producers include Matthew Myers and Jason Sokoloff, bringing additional creative expertise.

Filming took place across Brooklyn and the Bronx, with Netflix set to release the film globally in 2019.

Stefon Bristol, a Caribbean-American filmmaker with a background from Morehouse College and a 2016 MFA from NYU, has seen his works showcased worldwide, including his award-winning short "The Bodega."

Fredrica Bailey, also a 2016 NYU Tisch alum from Washington, D.C., has a history of recognition in screenwriting and has participated in notable contests such as Final Draft’s Big Break.

This visionary project combines social relevance with sci-fi adventure, aiming to entertain and provoke thought among diverse audiences worldwide.
